CASE STUDY

Caterpillar Engine Delivery to Albania

International transport can present a range of logistical challenges. Each shipment requires careful planning to ensure goods arrive safely and on time. In this case, Barrington Freight arranged the delivery of a Caterpillar engine from the United Kingdom to Albania on behalf of a machinery broker. The service was carried out using our pallet groupage system, managed door-to-door.

The success of this project highlights the importance of clear communication, accurate customs preparation, and reliable transport partners across Europe.

Client Requirement

The client, a machinery broker, needed a Caterpillar engine shipped to Tirana, Albania. Key requirements included:

  • Cost-effective transport using groupage services.
  • Full door-to-door delivery, including customs handling.
  • Reliable scheduling to align with the broker’s customer deadlines.

The client opted not to take insurance cover, relying instead on the standard carrier liability terms.

Key Milestones

  • Shipment booked: 12 August 2025
  • Goods collected: 15 August 2025
  • Departure from the UK: 22 August 2025
  • Arrival at Austrian depot: 25 August 2025
  • Onward departure to Albania: 29 August 2025
  • Arrival in Tirana: 4 September 2025
  • Final delivery to consignee: 5 September 2025

All movements proceeded to schedule, with no delays reported.

Logistics Process

Collection and Export

The engine was collected from the client’s premises in the UK on 15 August. Barrington Freight prepared the export customs paperwork, ensuring the declaration was completed accurately. This was critical in avoiding clearance delays when leaving the UK.

European Transport

On 22 August, the palletised cargo departed the UK. The groupage service transhipped at our Austrian partner’s depot. This step was vital, as it provided a controlled handover point before onward delivery to Albania.

Albanian Customs and Delivery

From Austria, the cargo departed on 29 August with final destination Tirana. Customs clearance was completed smoothly upon arrival on 4 September. The goods were delivered to the end customer the following day.

Potential Challenges and Risks

While this particular shipment ran according to plan, several potential issues were managed in advance:

  • Export paperwork errors: Incorrect or incomplete customs data could have caused delays at departure. Barrington Freight’s team managed this process directly, avoiding the risk.
  • Transhipment delays: Groupage services often rely on strict connections. Coordinating departure schedules between depots was essential to ensure no missed cut-offs.
  • Albanian customs clearance: Albania’s customs procedures can be complex. Pre-checking the paperwork minimised the chance of queries or extended clearance times.

Outcome

The Caterpillar engine was delivered in good condition, on time, and without disruption. The client reported satisfaction with both the cost-effectiveness of the groupage option and the reliability of the service. Barrington Freight’s support with customs paperwork was particularly valued, as it provided peace of mind and removed administrative pressure from the client.
