Simon Poole guided us through the customs paperwork, postponed VAT and commodity codes patiently, answering a great many questions from someone importing for the first time. Our delivery address is a narrow street with no forklift, and he arranged a smaller vehicle with a tail-lift so the crates could be offloaded by hand without difficulty. The shipment cleared ahead of schedule and, once we'd paid, delivery was arranged for the very next day with a time window confirmed in advance. - Ferry from Hull to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Customs Considerations, VAT and Prohibited Items

VAT Lithuania

To arrange a Lithuania delivery to the UK, you’ll need to handle customs declarations, including VAT notices. In Lithuania, VAT is referred to as “Pridėtinės vertės mokestis” (PVM). Lithuanian VAT rules are in accordance with EU guidelines, yet rates may differ for various types of goods, such as books which are rated at 9%. Nevertheless, the standard VAT rate in Lithuania is 21%, which aligns with many EU member states.

Restrictions

Shipping from Lithuania to the UK may involve additional paperwork for any of the following classes of goods:

Alcoholic Beverages: Specific limitations and duties apply when exporting and importing traditional Lithuanian alcoholic products, like midus (a type of mead) and various vodkas.
Amber: Given Lithuania’s rich amber deposits, there are special regulations on the export of raw and processed amber to safeguard this significant natural resource.
Electronic Surveillance Equipment: Strict rules and licensing requirements cover the export and import of surveillance devices, including advanced electronic equipment, in adherence to privacy and security regulations.
Furs and Leather Products: Regulations governing the export of fur and leather goods, particularly those derived from protected animal species in Lithuania, are in place.
Pharmaceuticals: Stringent EU regulations on the import and export of certain medicines necessitate specific clearance before they can be traded.

EORI Number Lithuania

Remember, too, that simply registering with HMRC as an importer of goods from Lithuania will not be sufficient – on its own – to be able to use Lithuanian suppliers.
