Importing from Finland to the UK

It is one of the most northern and remote countries on the planet and, as such, has a severe climate with nearly two-thirds blanketed by thick woodlands. Helsinki, the country’s capital, is a hub of activity, and Finland’s primary exports feature transport, electronics, forestry, machinery, and chemicals.

Finland is an affluent nation with a highly educated population and a prosperous economy. As a result, British products are popular throughout the country. Finland is also a digitalisation leader, shown through the services across so many sectors, including Finland’s lively start-up sector, a leading developer of AI, new technologies, and online platforms.

The government’s focus on strengthening trade means Finnish products are great to import to the UK as consumers are keen on high-quality tech innovations and products.

Customs Requirements

From 1 January 2021, goods imported or exported between Finland and the UK had to be declared to Customs, unlike prior when passing the borders was simple as an EU nation. Businesses now are under the same rules, restrictions and customs formalities as any other “third country”.

One requirement is an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number) required at each border – one for the UK and another for the EU. Our blog, What is an EORI Number has more. Your consignment type will also define your customs paperwork, so research and take advice from a customs agent. For more in-depth help, speak to your experienced freight forwarder and customs team to get the latest, up-to-date information for your specific cargo. Alternatively, get in touch with us for advice.

Import Requirements

VAT and Duty Fees

Post-Brexit imports from a European country attract additional duties unless the cargo comes under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, allowing tariff-free trade. To qualify for this, the exporter must make an official declaration saying the goods were manufactured in Finland – for more on this, speak to your customs agent or freight forwarder who will have up to date information on duties payable for your specific goods. There are reciprocal agreements for VAT liability too, so it is also worth taking advice on this to see what applies to your consignment.
