Shipping Times From UK to Portugal

How Long Does It Take to Ship to Portugal?

STANDARD ROAD FREIGHT TO PORTUGAL 4 DAYS

We do not believe in impersonal service for shipping from the UK to Portugal. Instead, you will work with the same knowledgeable specialist, which sets us apart from other European transport and haulage companies. Our standard Portugal delivery service takes four days following a collection making for a timely arrival for any standard, full load shipment in either direction.

For groupage shipping to Portugal, our rates are exceptionally competitive. Leveraging our extensive experience as Portugal freight forwarders, we ensure that groupage consignments are delivered efficiently, with collections occurring in week 1 and deliveries following in week 2. This streamlined process allows us to move your goods to their final destination swiftly, within a precise one-week timeframe after collection

EXPRESS SHIPPING TO PORTUGAL 3 DAYS

Our express freight service to Portugal involves sending shipments to the Iberian peninsula in the fastest way possible so that any customers in the country that place orders with British firms can expect them to arrive within a three-day time frame following collection. This is remarkably rapid for a service that does not rely on air freight. Indeed, by sending your goods to Portugal with our express road freight service, they could even end up at their intended destination sooner than with airborne cargo given all of the onward arrangements that would need to be made.

In short, our door-to-door service for express freight from the UK to Portugal means that your delivery will be in our hands for its entire journey. A driver will be sent to your business premises to collect the order, this is only possible thanks to our large fleet of vans, lorries and drivers who are located throughout the British Isles. As such, we can help you with the rapid transit of goods to Portugal whether you are located in Newcastle, Aberdeen, Wrexham, Exeter or anywhere else. Please note that express services can also be arranged when shipping from Portugal to the UK – just ask our operations team.

Portugese Import Customs Requirements

Customs Considerations, VAT and Prohibited Items

VAT PORTUGAL

To organise a Portugal delivery to the UK, it’s necessary to oversee customs declarations, including VAT notices. In Portugal, businesses registered for VAT, known as “IVA” (Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado), might be able to apply a zero rate to goods they export to the UK, subject to fulfilling certain criteria. Portuguese VAT regulations are in line with EU standards. The standard VAT rate in Portugal is 23%, which is comparable to or slightly lower than the rates in some other EU countries. Barrington Freight can help when shipping from Portugal to the UK thanks to our in-house customs clearance service.

Goods or ServicesVAT Rate Portugal
Standard taxable goods and services23%
Intermediate rate goods and services (e.g. musical instruments, agricultural tools)13%
Reduced rate goods and services (e.g. books, medicinal products)6%
Zero Rated products (e.g. goods exported out the country)0%
Restrictions

As British-based Portugal freight forwarders, we can advise on any restrictions that may apply to imports including those imposed on the following examples:

  • Cork Products: Due to Portugal’s status as the world’s largest cork producer, there are specific regulations on the export of cork to maintain quality standards and sustainability.
  • Port Wine and Madeira Wine: Specific rules and excise duties on the export and import of certain iconic Portuguese wines may apply.
  • Pharmaceuticals and Narcotics: Strict controls cover the import and export of drugs and certain pharmaceutical products, requiring appropriate authorisation in line with EU directives.
  • Olive Oil: Regulations on the export of olive oil and some traditional Portuguese food products to ensure authenticity are maintained.
  • Traditional Ceramics and Handicrafts: Restrictions on the export of traditional Portuguese ceramics, including hand-painted pottery and items from renowned regions like Caldas da Rainha, may apply.
EORI Number Portugal

You will need an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number) for the UK and any EU country you ship to and from alongside a range of other customs requirements. See our blog on what is an EORI Number? for more information.

Remember, too, that simply registering with HMRC as an importer of goods from Portugal will not be sufficient – on its own – to be able to use Portugese suppliers.

Barrington Freight operates as a customs clearance agency as well as a team of expert freight forwarders, so we can help you with all of these matters if you need us to, whether you’re importing or exporting. We have the necessary licensing arrangements in place to oversee exported goods from the UK to Portugal which has the same regulations in place as every other EU state. Therefore, we can help with multiple consignment deliveries that might include some in Portugal and some in other countries, such as those in France, Spain or Belgium, for instance.

Shipping Routes to Portugal from the UK

For many in the UK, Portugal is probably best known as a tourist destination. The Algarve, historic Lisbon, medieval villages like Obidos and Monsaraz, or charming fishing villages such as Nazare, Tavira or Ericeira are all great places to stay. The Portuguese Republic is named after the (historically) largest city, Porto and is split into eighteen separate districts: Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Braganca, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Evora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Porto, Santarem, Setubal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu. Traditionally known for textiles, shoes, clothes, and the world’s largest cork producer, Portugal is now active in high-tech exports, snowmobiles and golf carts.

Our local UK depots and European partner depots provide total coverage for road haulage to and from all Portuguese towns and cities such as Sintra, Vila Nova de Gaia, Armadora, Almada, Agualva-Cacem, Queluz, Guimaraes, Rio Tinto and Odivelas. Our reliable Portugal delivery service also covers Matosinhos, Amora, Barreiro, da Rainha, Caldas, Abrantes, Albufeira, Ermesinde and the district capitals, too. As such, we can arrange rapid shipping to Portugal in places like Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Porto, Santarem, Setubal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu.

Shipping from the UK to Portugal by road often involves one of the following routes. However, as an express courier to Portugal, we may use alternatives if they are quicker.
