How Long Does It Take to Ship to Bulgaria?
STANDARD ROAD FREIGHT TO BULGARIA 6 DAYS
For full load shipments to Bulgaria, we will collect your goods on day 1 and deliver on day 6 from virtually any collection point in the mainland UK. Our careful route planning and extensive road transit network also means that you can expect a similar lead time for shipping from Bulgaria to the UK by road, which is especially helpful if your current Bulgarian supplier is charging you a large fee for slower delivery times.
We also offer groupage rates for any delivery to Bulgaria. If you choose this low-cost option, then we will collect your goods on week 1 and ensure they are delivered in week 3.
For more information on our groupage rates and other delivery options to Bulgaria, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are here to provide you with the most cost-effective and efficient logistics solutions tailored to your needs.
EXPRESS SHIPPING TO BULGARIA 5 DAYS
If we have a smaller, palletised shipment that can go in a van, then we can expect to reach any destination in Bulgaria in as little as three days. With an impressive 5 day express service, shipping from the UK to Bulgaria has never been more reliable, even in the post-Brexit environment.
Unlike air freight services – which we can also arrange, express delivery to Bulgaria by road means that your goods will be under the control of your assigned driver at all times. Air freight is more costly and will involve drivers to and from the airport as well as ground-handling crews dealing with your shipment. Instead, an express freight service can be arranged by us to ensure the goods receive a dedicated, door-to-door service.

Customs Considerations, VAT and Prohibited Items
VAT BULGARIA
To organise a delivery from Bulgaria to the UK, you will need to navigate through customs declarations that encompass VAT notices and potentially excise duty as well. Note that VAT-registered businesses may have the opportunity to zero-rate goods they export to the UK, subject to certain conditions being fulfilled. In Bulgaria, the equivalent of VAT is known as Данък върху добавената стойност (ДДС). Bulgarian VAT rules adhere to EU regulations, though there can be some differences in the application to various classes of goods. The standard VAT rate in Bulgaria is 20%, aligning with many EU countries’ rates.
Goods or Services | VAT Rate Bulgaria |
---|---|
Standard taxable goods and services | 20% | Reduced rate goods and services (e.g. books and certain baby items) | 9% |
Zero rated products (e.g. export transactions that involve goods leaving the EU) | 0% |
Restrictions
Like other EU countries, certain classes of goods are restricted or subject to further controls. Seek expert advice if you trade in any of the following items:
- Agricultural Products and Live Animals: Specific health certificates and permissions are needed for import and export.
- CITES-Protected Species: The import or export of endangered species and their derivatives is regulated under this international agreement.
- Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Items infringing intellectual property rights are prohibited, including those with protected copyrights and trademarks.
- Hazardous Materials: Specific chemicals, radioactive materials and waste necessitate proper handling and shipping certifications.
- Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances: These items are strictly regulated, with stringent controls over their import and export, except for licensed pharmaceuticals.
- Weapons and Ammunition: Import or export is allowed only with the necessary licenses and permits, following rigorous border checks.
EORI Number Bulgaria
You will need an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number) for the UK and any EU country you ship to and from alongside a range of other customs requirements. See our blog on what is an EORI Number? for more information.
Remember, too, that simply registering with HMRC as an importer of goods from Bulgaria will not be sufficient – on its own – to be able to use Bulgarian suppliers.
Barrington Freight operates as a customs clearance agency as well as a team of expert freight forwarders, so we can help you with all of these matters if you need us to, whether you’re importing or exporting. We have the necessary licensing arrangements in place to oversee exported goods from the UK to Bulgaria which has the same regulations in place as every other EU state. Therefore, we can help with multiple consignment deliveries that might include some in Bulgaria and some in other countries, such as those in France, Spain or Belgium, for instance.
Shipping Routes to Bulgaria from the UK
Bulgaria is a Balkan nation bordered by Turkey, Greece, Romania, Macedonia and Serbia. It is our local knowledge of shipping to Bulgaria that makes such a difference to the quality of service on offer. For example, when shipping from the UK to Bulgaria, it is worth knowing that the Balkan Mountains run laterally across the country, as do a number of major through-routes. Consequently, our main local distribution depot is near the capital Sofia in the west of the country, from where the fast A1 (Southern) and A2 (Northern) motorways run eastwards to the Black Sea coast.
This provides excellent access right across the country and we ship Bulgarian freight to and from every city, town and village including Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Haskovo, Rousse, Dobrich, Stara Zagora, Pleven, Sliven, Pernik, Shumen, Yambol, Pazardzhik, Blagoevgrad, Gabrovo, Asenovgrad, Veliko Tarnovo, Vratsa, Vidin, Kazanlak, Kyustendil, Kardzhali, Montana, Lovech and elsewhere.
