CASE STUDY
Overcoming Last-Minute Obstacles to Deliver Critical Educational Equipment to Zimbabwe
In late April, Barrington Freight was commissioned to arrange the international transport of a mobile science laboratory destined for Harare, Zimbabwe. The shipment was scheduled to be showcased at a high-profile demonstration attended by several senior government Ministers – a unique opportunity to introduce innovative educational technology in the region.
While initially planned as a routine shipment, the timeline quickly escalated in urgency. The laboratory needed to arrive in time for the demonstration, making punctual delivery absolutely critical. Our team immediately re-prioritised the consignment and identified the fastest viable route via Heathrow and Nairobi.

Project Scope & Timeline
Barrington Freight Navigates Complex Challenges to Ensure On-Time Delivery for Ministerial Demonstration
- Shipment Type: Mobile Science Laboratory – large crate (Air Freight)
- Destination: Harare International Airport, Zimbabwe
- Collection Date: 28th April
- Delivery Date: 7th May
- Transit Route: Heathrow – Nairobi – Harare
Challenges and Solutions
A Fast Start… Then a Setback
On 28th April, the crate was collected on the next working morning following confirmation and returned to Heathrow. It departed from Heathrow on 30th April and arrived in Nairobi as scheduled.
However, complications arose during the transfer. Despite the shipment being within the published cargo height limits, the airline unexpectedly deemed it unsuitable for the connecting passenger aircraft to Harare. The crate was bumped from the flight, placing the entire mission at risk.
International Coordination Under Pressure
With the demonstration deadline looming, Barrington Freight coordinated with airline contacts in the UK as well as Nairobi and Harare, the consignee on the ground in Zimbabwe and the consignee’s handling agent at Harare airport. All parties involved intervened to apply logistical pressure on the Nairobi office of the airline.
Our operations team worked tirelessly across time zones, escalating the issue at every level and ensuring the crate was prioritised for the next available movement.
Outcome
A Critical Arrival
Thanks to these efforts, the shipment was released and flown to Harare on 7th May – just in time for the scheduled demonstration. The crate was delivered in perfect condition, and the showcase proceeded as planned.
Initial feedback suggests the equipment made a strong impression on attending officials, and there is optimism about the project’s future expansion.
