Customs Considerations, VAT and Prohibited Items
VAT Germany
The standard rate of VAT in Germany is 19% although certain classes of so-called convenience goods are charged at 7%. This will necessarily affect any customs declarations you need to make for import duty and sales tax for any commercial shipments, something we can help with. Also, bear in mind that packaging is important in Germany and something for which exporters need to be prepared. See the German Packaging Act for further guidance.

Restrictions
Exporting goods from the UK to Germany, as is the case with any EU country, is regulated. Make further checks if you are considering shipping to Germany any of the following items:
- Certain firearms and ammunition: Strictly regulated under EU law, they require appropriate licenses and documentation.
- Endangered species of flora and fauna: Protected under CITES, this includes products made from such species.
- Counterfeit products: Including goods infringing on intellectual property rights such as fake designer clothes, accessories and electronics.
- Hazardous chemicals: Restricted under the EU’s REACH regulation, Germany has other chemical safety laws to take into consideration.
- Cultural goods: Items of significant cultural value may require export licenses to prevent illegal trade.
- Ivory: This trade is highly regulated to protect endangered species even for antique items.
- Food items and agricultural products: Subject to health and safety regulations, including bans on certain GMOs and products not meeting EU standards.
EORI Number Germany
More customs documents and authorisations are needed now since Brexit to send goods to Europe. For starters, an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number) is needed for both the UK and Germany alongside other documents and customs demands. Remember, too, that simply registering with HMRC as an importer of goods from Germany will not be sufficient – on its own – to be able to use German suppliers.
