Importing LED Lighting into the UK

Each shipment is planned around its collection point, volume, weight, value and delivery date. We can collect from factories, suppliers and consolidation warehouses.

Our import service can include:

  • Supplier or factory collection
  • Coordination with overseas freight agents
  • Road, sea and air freight booking
  • LCL and FCL container services
  • Invoice and packing-list checks
  • UK customs clearance support
  • Delivery to warehouses, shops and fulfilment centres

Before booking, we ask for carton or pallet dimensions, gross weight, quantities and accurate product descriptions. Importers should confirm whether the shipment contains power supplies or batteries that could affect the transport requirements.

LED products can include glass, electronic parts and finished surfaces. Suitable packaging, internal protection and secure palletisation can reduce the risk of damage during handling.

HS Codes for LED Lights

LED lighting products do not all use the same HS or UK commodity code. Classification depends on whether the shipment contains individual diodes, LED modules, replacement lamps or complete lighting fittings.

Examples can include:

  • 8539 52 00: LED lamps and replacement bulbs
  • 9405 11: Ceiling or wall lighting fittings designed solely for LED light sources
  • 9405 42: Other non-photovoltaic lighting fittings designed solely for LED light sources
  • 9405 42 10 00: Certain non-photovoltaic LED searchlights and spotlights
  • Heading 8541: Individual light-emitting diodes rather than complete lamps or fittings

LED strips require careful classification. HMRC guidance states that strips containing LEDs, transistors, resistors and protection diodes may fall under subheadings 9405 41 or 9405 42, depending on the product.

The final code can depend on the product’s construction, materials, voltage, power source and intended use. Importers should confirm the full classification through the UK Trade Tariff rather than relying only on a code supplied by the manufacturer.

Customs Clearance and Import Requirements

Businesses importing commercial goods into England, Wales or Scotland will normally need a GB EORI number. The customs declaration must include the correct commodity code, customs value, country of origin and a clear description of the goods.

Typical documents and information can include:

  • A commercial invoice
  • A detailed packing list
  • The importer’s GB EORI number
  • Commodity or tariff codes
  • Country-of-origin information
  • Freight and insurance values
  • Carton counts, weights and dimensions
  • Product model numbers and specifications
  • Required safety or conformity documents

The commodity code and customs value will be used when calculating any Customs Duty and import VAT due. The code can also show whether additional controls or requirements apply to the goods.

Importers should check current HMRC guidance before the shipment leaves the supplier. They should also make sure the products meet the relevant UK safety, labelling and conformity requirements before they are placed on the market.

Flexible Freight Options for LED Light Imports

Importing LED Lights from Europe, China, Vietnam and Japan

European countries supply a wide range of commercial, industrial and decorative lighting products, while China, Vietnam and Japan are established sources of LED bulbs, strips, fittings, components and specialist lighting technology.

The right freight method depends on the size of the shipment and how quickly it needs to arrive:

  • Road freight: Used for LED lighting imports from suppliers across Europe, with pallet, groupage, LTL and FTL services available.
  • Sea freight: Suitable for pallets, bulk stock and regular imports from China, Vietnam or Japan. LCL can suit smaller consignments, while FCL provides a dedicated container.
  • Air freight: Useful for samples, urgent stock, product launches and compact high-value components.

We can coordinate multimodal shipments that combine supplier collection, sea or air transport, customs clearance and final delivery.
