A documentation-led UK to Ireland road freight solution for a supplier of non-slip decking
Barrington Freight arranged a UK to Ireland road freight groupage shipment for a supplier of non-slip and anti-slip decking products. The consignment contained FSC 100% decking and required additional documentation before transport could proceed.
Our team worked directly with the client to correct the commercial invoice and prepare the required bark-free declaration. Once the documentation was complete, we coordinated collection, road transport and final delivery.

Choosing road freight groupage
Groupage is a practical option for commercial road freight shipments that do not require a complete trailer. Goods from several customers travel together, with each customer paying for the space used by their consignment.
This can offer a more cost-effective alternative to a dedicated vehicle or full-load service. It is particularly suitable when the shipment is properly packed, the delivery is not extremely urgent and there is some flexibility in the transport schedule.
Barrington Freight selected and arranged a suitable road freight groupage service for the decking. We coordinated the shipment from booking through to delivery and remained available to help the client with the documentation required for transport.
Commercial invoice details needed updating
Before the shipment could move, several details on the commercial invoice needed attention. The invoice did not include the agreed Incoterms or the total cubic volume of the consignment.
Incoterms are important because they define how responsibilities and costs are divided between the seller and buyer. They help the parties involved understand who is responsible for transport, customs formalities, risk and other charges at each stage of the shipment.
The total volume, stated in cubic metres or m3, is also important for a groupage booking. Groupage charges are often affected by the space occupied by the goods as well as their weight. Accurate measurements allow the haulier to allocate enough trailer space and reduce the risk of unexpected charges or collection problems.
Barrington Freight contacted the client and explained which details needed to be added. The invoice was then amended so that the transport documentation matched the shipment information.
Bark-free declaration required
A bark-free declaration was also required for the decking shipment. Timber and wood products can be subject to additional checks because bark may carry pests or plant diseases. Depending on the goods, route and customs requirements, the relevant parties may request written confirmation that the timber is free from bark.
The client did not already have the required declaration. To prevent the documentation issue from holding up the booking, Barrington Freight supplied a suitable template. This gave the client a clear format to complete and avoided uncertainty over what information the declaration needed to contain.
Our team checked that the necessary paperwork had been addressed before the goods entered the transport process. Resolving these points early helped the collection and onward movement proceed more smoothly.
Cargo insurance arranged through Breeze
The shipment was insured through Breeze, Barrington Freight’s cargo insurance partner.
Carrier liability and cargo insurance are not the same. A carrier’s liability may be restricted by the applicable transport terms, the weight of the goods and the circumstances surrounding a loss or damage claim. It may not cover the full commercial value of a consignment.
Cargo insurance provides additional protection, subject to the policy terms and exclusions. Barrington Freight can offer eligible customers access to cover through its partnership with Breeze, providing a straightforward way to arrange insurance alongside the freight booking.
For this shipment, the insurance was put in place before transport commenced.
Managing the shipment
Once the documents had been updated, Barrington Freight coordinated the remaining stages of the UK to Ireland road freight groupage movement.
The key milestones were:
- The shipment was booked on 21 August 2026.
- The goods were collected on 26 August 2026.
- The consignment moved through the groupage network.
- Final delivery was completed on 11 September 2026.
Groupage services may involve consolidation with other consignments, terminal handling and planned departures. Delivery times are therefore normally estimated rather than guaranteed. Clear documentation and accurate shipment details remain important because errors can affect collection, customs processing or onward movement.
In this case, the missing information was identified and addressed before it could cause a larger problem. The shipment then progressed through the planned road freight process to final delivery.
The outcome
The FSC 100% decking was successfully transported to Ireland using a road freight groupage service and delivered on 11 September 2026.
Barrington Freight supported the client by:
- Arranging a suitable groupage freight service
- Identifying missing information on the commercial invoice
- Explaining the need to include Incoterms and cubic volume
- Providing a template for the bark-free declaration
- Arranging cargo insurance through Breeze
- Coordinating collection and final delivery
The case demonstrates the value of checking documents before a shipment begins. Small omissions can create delays if they are discovered after collection or during transport. By working with the client at the booking stage, Barrington Freight helped ensure that the correct information was available and that the goods could move through the transport network efficiently.
