LCL Import from the USA to the UK for a Cheese-Making Company
Managing the sea freight, cargo insurance and final delivery of a large cheese vat

The shipment
The client needed to import a cheese vat for use within its production operation. Due to the size of the equipment, it was packed into one large shipping crate.
LCL sea freight was selected for the shipment. LCL stands for less than container load. It allows a shipper to transport cargo within a shared shipping container rather than paying for an entire container.
This was a practical option because the crate did not require the full capacity of a container. It provided a balance between cost and transit time for the USA to UK import.

Arranging the LCL import
The shipment was booked with Barrington Freight on 26 May 2026. Collection took place on 29 May.
Once collected, the crate needed to be prepared for export and allocated to an appropriate LCL sailing. Export documents must be supplied before cargo can be loaded and cleared for departure.
In this case, the shipper did not provide the required export documents in time for the planned vessel. As a result, the crate could not travel on the original sailing and had to be rolled to the next available departure.
Barrington Freight monitored the position and kept the shipment moving once the documents were available. The crate departed from Montreal on 28 June 2026.
Although the missed sailing extended the overall transit time, moving the cargo to the next available vessel avoided further delay.
Cargo insurance through Breeze AI
The client chose to insure the cheese vat while it was in transit.

Arrival in the UK
The vessel arrived on 18 July 2026. Following arrival, the crate passed through the normal import and handling process before final delivery was arranged.
Delivering a large crate requires careful planning. The unloading method must be suitable for the shipment’s dimensions and weight. Access at the delivery site must also be considered.
The initial delivery attempt could not be completed because the receiving site’s forklift was unable to cope with the weight of the crate. The driver could not safely unload the cheese vat using the equipment available.
Attempting to force the unloading process would have created a risk to the cargo, the vehicle and those involved. The delivery was therefore refused and the crate was retained for redelivery.
Rearranging the delivery
After the unsuccessful delivery attempt, Barrington Freight reviewed the position and coordinated a new delivery date.
This required further communication between the client, the delivery operator and the parties handling the cargo. The aim was to make sure that the crate could be received safely and that the correct arrangements were in place.
Barrington Freight rearranged the transport and kept the delivery process under control. The cheese vat was successfully delivered on 27 July 2026.
The response avoided unsafe unloading and allowed the shipment to be completed once suitable arrangements had been made at the destination.

The outcome
The cheese vat reached its UK destination and the import was completed successfully.
