It’s no secret that the term ‘trucking’ stirs up images of hefty lorries filled to the brim with precious cargo, cabs filled with memorabilia and fast food trash, and a distinctly American-looking driver. Of course, the freighting life isn’t quite as ‘Hollywood’ as all that, but the fact of the matter is this – drivers can sit behind the wheel for hours at a time, with nothing but road ahead of them and from time to time, we need just a little bit of entertainment. What better way to get that entertainment than with the ultimate playlist?

Now we know that music is a matter of taste, but there’s no denying that sometimes a song comes along that, no matter your music taste, is just perfect for a situation. We’ve pulled together a list of those songs perfect for long drives to fill the traffic-filled hours.

  1. On The Road Again – Willie Nelson

As much as you’ll hear about the long hours spent alone either driving, or taking a break from driving, the people that get behind that wheel to deliver your freight love doing it. There’s something special about jumping behind the wheel and setting off on the open road, and what better way to celebrate that then the classic On The Road Again by Willie Nelson? Country may not be your style, but fan or not, you’ll probably find yourself putting on your best accent to belt out the classic lyric “I just can’t wait to get on the road again.”

  1. Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler) – Alabama

Another country tune – are you sensing a pattern too, or is it just us? This song might not be the first you’d pick, but there’s no denying that it’s just as much of a classic as Willie Nelson’s hit. The story in the song might take a turn for the worse at one point, but with the conclusion seeing the truck driver surviving his apparent crash and being back with his wife and kids, there’s definitely a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel in this case. Besides, we all need a Billboard Hot Country Singles chart hit on our playlists from time to time, don’t we?

  1. Purple Sky – Kid Rock

This hard-rock band has plenty of hits you could include on your playlist, from All Summer Long, to Trucker Anthem, but we’re starting you off with Purple Sky. This 2010 release brought back a softer side of rock for the band, and while it’s certainly not their most popular hit, it’s still a favourite for drivers across the world. Besides, what’s more relatable than the lyric “I just wanna drive ‘til I run out of highway into the purple sky”?

  1. I’ve Been Everywhere – Johnny Cash

We couldn’t have a trucking playlist without a bit of Johnny Cash, and here it is. I’ve Been Everywhere is a song that pretty much everyone has heard. What’s more, if you aren’t a Johnny Cash fan, this song is one of the most covered, having been originally written back in 1959 and sung by Lucky Starr. With plenty of voices, styles, tones and more to choose from, you can enjoy this hit in countless different ways – the Johnny Cash version is just arguably the most popular!

  1. Livin’ On A Prayer – Bon Jovi

This song has absolutely nothing to do with trucking, but when you’re stuck in traffic or hurtling down a highway, sometimes all you need is a song to belt out, and there’s nothing better out there than this Bon Jovi hit. Lose your voice trying to reach the same notes as Jon Bon Jovi, or give yourself neck ache banging your head when at a standstill – we won’t judge. We’ll also accept the replacement of this song with absolutely any of Bon Jovi’s greatest hits. Who Says You Can’t Go Home is a calmer, feel good tune for a more tranquil sing along, or It’s My Life could take you straight back to the rebellious teenage days – whatever the case, pick a song, add it onto that playlist, and get ready to belt it out.

  1. Home – A Cover Of Your Choice!

Another widely covered song, Home has many, many an option for your playlist. Maybe you enjoy the smooth, sultry tones of Michael Buble and his original version, or you’re more of a Westlife fan and have a deep appreciation for the key changes. Blake Shelton has also released a version for those country fans among you. Whatever version you choose, this song is perfect for the return journey home. In that last stretch, there’s nothing better than getting excited for reaching your front door and greeting your long-missed friends and family – and this song can give you just a taste of it in the meantime.

While this blog is certainly light hearted in nature, the long days of a truck driver can certainly be made that little bit better with the right playlist. Whether you’re a driver yourself, or are just looking for a bit of an insight into the day in the life of the driver delivering your freight, hopefully this post has given you a good starting point for creating your own playlist.
