Businesses do not always have enough cargo to fill an entire lorry, shipping container or aircraft unit. Paying for all that unused capacity would rarely make commercial sense. Consolidated freight provides an alternative.

Under a consolidated freight service, shipments from several businesses share the same transport capacity. Each customer pays for the space or chargeable weight their goods occupy, along with the handling and other services required.

Consolidation is widely used for road, sea and air freight. It can make international shipping more affordable, but it is important to understand how the process affects transit times, handling and delivery arrangements.

What is consolidated freight?

Consolidated freight is cargo from two or more shipments grouped together for part of its journey. The individual consignments normally travel in the same general direction, although they may have different shippers and final delivery addresses.

For example, five UK exporters may each have several pallets destined for Germany. A freight operator can collect the separate shipments and bring them to a depot. The pallets are then combined into one trailer travelling to a German distribution hub.

After arrival, the consolidated load is separated. Each consignment continues to its individual recipient.

The same principle applies to less than container load sea freight, known as LCL, and consolidated air freight.

How does freight consolidation work?

The exact process varies by transport mode and route, but it will usually involve the following stages:

  1. Booking and collection: Individual shipments are collected from suppliers or delivered into a designated warehouse.
  2. Consolidation: Goods travelling towards the same destination are grouped at a depot, terminal or cargo facility.
  3. Main transport movement: The combined load travels by road, sea, air or a mixture of transport modes.
  4. Deconsolidation: The load is separated at a destination terminal or warehouse.
  5. Customs clearance: For international movements, the required customs procedures are completed.
  6. Final delivery: Each shipment is allocated to a local vehicle or delivery network for transport to its recipient.

Consolidation does not always mean that every shipment shares its entire journey. Cargo may be combined for the international leg and then separated for local delivery.

Types of consolidated freight

Road groupage

Road groupage combines pallets and other consignments from several customers in one vehicle. It is widely used for UK and European freight.

A shipment may pass through more than one depot as it moves between regional and international networks. This allows operators to use vehicle capacity efficiently and provide regular services without requiring each customer to book a full load.

LCL sea freight

Less than container load shipping is used when one customer does not have enough cargo to fill a container. Shipments from several exporters are loaded into the same container, usually at a container freight station.

At the destination, the container is unpacked and the separate consignments are released after the necessary customs and port procedures.

LCL can be economical for smaller sea freight shipments. However, the additional consolidation and deconsolidation stages can make it slower than a direct full container load service.

Consolidated air freight

Air freight forwarders can group several shipments under one main air waybill. Each customer’s consignment is then recorded under its own house air waybill.

Consolidated air freight may cost less than an individual airline booking. It can still provide a much faster option than sea freight, although departure schedules and cut-off times must be considered.

Buyer’s consolidation

A UK importer buying from several overseas suppliers may arrange for the orders to be sent to one origin warehouse. The goods can be combined into a larger shipment before export.

This can reduce the number of separate freight movements and destination charges. It can also simplify stock planning, provided the supplier production dates are coordinated carefully.

What are the benefits of consolidated shipping?

The main advantage is usually cost. A business pays for part of the available capacity rather than hiring an entire vehicle or container.

Other possible benefits include:

  • Access to regular international services for small shipments
  • More efficient use of trailers, containers and aircraft capacity
  • Fewer separate transport movements
  • The ability to combine orders from several suppliers
  • Greater flexibility for businesses importing or exporting smaller quantities
  • Lower storage requirements compared with waiting to build a full load

Consolidation may also support inventory planning. A business can order smaller quantities more regularly instead of holding stock until there is enough cargo to justify a full container or trailer.

What are the limitations?

Consolidated freight is efficient, but it is not the right solution for every shipment.

The goods must normally wait for the planned consolidation departure. They may also pass through several terminals and be handled more than once. Delays affecting one part of the shared movement can influence other consignments travelling in the same load.

Collection and delivery dates may therefore be estimates rather than guarantees. Factors such as customs checks, terminal congestion, ferry schedules, driver availability and delays at other collection points can affect the timetable.

Businesses should also consider:

  • Whether the packaging is strong enough for shared transport
  • If the goods can be safely stacked
  • Whether the dimensions supplied at booking are accurate
  • Collection and delivery access
  • Customs documentation
  • Insurance requirements
  • Any fixed deadline at the destination

At Barrington Freight, we regularly explain the difference between a groupage service and a dedicated vehicle.

Groupage works well when cost is important and there is reasonable flexibility in the schedule. If goods must arrive for an installation, exhibition or production deadline, a dedicated or express option may be more suitable.

How are consolidated freight charges calculated?

Charges depend on the mode of transport.

Road groupage is often priced using the number of pallets, dimensions, weight, loading metres and route. Sea freight may be calculated by weight or volume, often referred to as weight or measurement. Air freight uses chargeable weight, which compares the shipment’s actual weight with its volumetric weight.

Extra charges may apply for:

  • Non-stackable or oversized cargo
  • Tail-lift collections or deliveries
  • Limited-access premises
  • Customs clearance
  • Storage
  • Additional handling
  • Remote collection or delivery locations

Accurate information is essential. If a pallet is larger, heavier or less stackable than declared, it occupies more shared capacity and may attract additional charges.

Is consolidated freight right for your business?

Consolidated freight is often suitable for regular pallet shipments, smaller import orders and businesses that do not need exclusive use of a vehicle or container.

Before booking, tell your freight forwarder about any deadline, unusual dimensions, handling restrictions or delivery requirements. This allows the forwarder to compare groupage, LCL, air consolidation and dedicated transport on a like-for-like basis.

Barrington Freight arranges consolidated road, sea and air freight for UK businesses. By reviewing the cargo, route, timing and delivery requirements, we can identify whether consolidation offers the right balance of cost, speed and control.

We had a time-critical air freight shipment coming in from China to the UK and Simon was a huge help in getting it over the line. Right before arrival, an issue came up due to a mistake from the airline, which could have turned into a real headache. Simon picked it up straight away, dealt with it quickly and managed to sort everything without any extra costs on our side. Really solid support throughout and easy to deal with, especially given the urgency. Another great job by Barrington Freight - we’ll definitely be using them again!

Good service during a turbulent global shipping period. Special thanks goes to Lee for his efficiency and proactive updates and for rescheduling a delivery in less than 24hrs when the haulage company didn’t read their own paperwork and sent a lorry without the requested tail lift. Highly recommended.
