Moving a full container load (FCL) from overseas to the UK involves much more than booking space on a ship. Every stage, from the initial quotation through to final delivery, needs careful planning to avoid delays, unexpected costs and Customs issues.
For UK importers, understanding the process helps set realistic expectations and ensures everyone involved has the right information at the right time.
At Barrington Freight, we manage full container shipments every day, working closely with trusted overseas partners to keep cargo moving smoothly. Here’s what you can expect when shipping a full container load from countries such as China to the UK.

What is FCL shipping?

A Full Container Load (FCL) shipment means one customer has the exclusive use of an entire shipping container. Unlike Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments, your goods are not consolidated with cargo belonging to other importers.
FCL is often the most economical option when:
  • Your shipment is large enough to fill most of a container
  • You want to reduce cargo handling
  • Your goods are valuable or fragile
  • Faster overall transit is important
The most common container sizes are 20ft and 40ft containers, although high cube containers are also widely used where additional internal height is beneficial.

Step 1: Obtaining an accurate quotation

The quotation stage is one of the most important parts of the process. Accurate information at the beginning prevents surprises later.
One of the first things we establish is the agreed Incoterm between the buyer and supplier.
The most common options are:
  • FOB (Free On Board): Your supplier is responsible for delivering the container to the departure port and loading it onto the vessel. From that point onwards, the freight costs become your responsibility.
  • EXW (Ex Works): The supplier simply makes the goods available at their premises. Collection, export handling, export Customs and international transport all become part of the freight forwarding process.
Knowing whether the shipment is FOB or EXW allows us to build an accurate quotation.
Our experienced FCL partner in China reviews every shipment individually. Rather than simply selecting the cheapest sailing, they balance:
  • Overall transit time
  • Vessel schedules
  • Port congestion
  • Shipping line reliability
  • Overall transport cost
Based on the information provided, they will also recommend the most suitable UK port of arrival. This may not always be the geographically closest port if another routing provides a better balance of speed, reliability and inland haulage costs.
At Barrington Freight, we normally provide a straightforward lump sum quotation covering either:
  • FOB to your UK premises, or
  • Door-to-door from the supplier’s premises overseas
UK Customs clearance is shown as a separate cost, so clients have complete transparency over the charges involved.

Step 2: Booking the shipment

Once the quotation is accepted, the shipment can be booked.
At this point, we immediately instruct our overseas agent to contact your supplier directly.
Our overseas team will arrange:
  • Export booking
  • Container availability
  • Collection arrangements where applicable
  • Export documentation
  • Communication with the supplier throughout the process
This removes much of the administrative burden from the importer while ensuring everyone is working from the same schedule.

Step 3: Shipping schedule confirmation

Once the booking has been secured, we receive the proposed shipping schedule from our overseas partner.
This typically includes:
  • Container collection date
  • Container stuffing date
  • Port arrival
  • Vessel departure
  • Estimated UK arrival
We then confirm these dates with our client so everyone understands the planned timeline.
Shipping schedules can occasionally change due to weather, port congestion or shipping line operational changes, but early communication helps manage expectations.

Step 4: Container stuffing

Once the empty container has been delivered to the supplier, the goods are loaded into the container.
This process is commonly known as container stuffing.
The supplier loads the cargo, seals the container and prepares it for export.
For many manufacturers in China, this is a routine process carried out daily. However, correct loading remains important because poor weight distribution can lead to damaged cargo or difficulties during transport.

Step 5: Bill of Lading checks

Before the vessel departs, a draft Bill of Lading is produced.
This draft should always be checked carefully before being finalised.
The following details should be verified:
  • Shipper details
  • Consignee details
  • Notify party
  • Cargo description
  • Number of packages
  • Container numbers
  • Seal numbers
  • Gross weight
  • Measurement
Correcting mistakes at draft stage is far easier than amending documents after the vessel has sailed.
Once the vessel has departed, the shipping line issues the final Bill of Lading.

Step 6: Arrange a Telex Release and prepare the import documents

After the vessel has departed, the importer should encourage the supplier to arrange a Telex Release as soon as possible.
A Telex Release is an electronic authorisation from the shipping line confirming that the original Bills of Lading no longer need to be physically presented before the cargo can be released. This avoids delays caused by couriering original documents around the world and is now the preferred option for many standard commercial shipments.
At the same time, your supplier should provide the final:
  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Commodity HS codes
  • Any supporting certificates if required
These documents are essential for UK Customs clearance.
One of the most common causes of delays is waiting for complete paperwork after the vessel has already departed. Obtaining everything early gives your freight forwarder time to identify and resolve any issues before arrival.

Step 7: UK Customs preparation

Around one week before the vessel is due to arrive in the UK, we begin preparing the import clearance.
This allows us to:
  • Review all documentation
  • Check commodity codes
  • Verify Customs values
  • Prepare the import declaration
  • Pre-book the delivery haulage
Much of the preparation can be completed before the vessel arrives, helping reduce delays once the container is available for collection.
The Customs declaration itself can only be fully completed once the vessel has arrived and the container has been discharged at the UK port.

Step 8: Customs clearance

Once the vessel has berthed and the container has been landed, UK Customs clearance is finalised.
Provided there are no documentary issues or Customs inspections, the container can then be released for delivery.
If HMRC or Border Force select the shipment for examination, additional time may be required, but this is outside the control of both the importer and freight forwarder.
Ensuring accurate paperwork from the outset significantly reduces the likelihood of unnecessary delays.

Step 9: Final delivery

Once Customs clearance has been completed and the container has been released by the port, delivery takes place.
For most UK container deliveries, haulage is booked into either:
  • A morning delivery slot, typically around 9 am, or
  • An afternoon delivery slot, typically around 1 pm
The exact timing depends on the haulier, delivery location and port operations.
Before delivery, it’s important to ensure:
  • Suitable access for the articulated vehicle
  • Staff are available to unload promptly
  • Any unloading equipment has been arranged if required
After unloading, the haulier returns the empty container to the shipping line’s nominated depot.
We are friendly, easy to work with, honest and we do not charge the earth.

Why planning makes the difference

Although the shipping process follows a fairly predictable sequence, delays usually occur because information is missing rather than because something has gone wrong with the transport itself.
From our experience managing FCL imports, the smoothest shipments are those where:
  • Incoterms are agreed before requesting a quotation
  • Suppliers respond quickly to documentation requests
  • Draft Bills of Lading are checked carefully
  • Telex Release is arranged promptly
  • Commercial invoices and packing lists are supplied before arrival
  • Customs clearance is prepared in advance
Each of these small steps helps avoid unnecessary storage charges, delivery delays and last-minute complications.

How Barrington Freight supports FCL shipments

Managing an international container shipment involves coordinating suppliers, overseas agents, shipping lines, Customs brokers and UK hauliers. Having one point of contact throughout the process makes communication much simpler.
At Barrington Freight, we work with trusted overseas partners to manage every stage of the shipment, from the initial quotation through to final delivery. Our team coordinates with suppliers, prepares Customs documentation, monitors vessel schedules and arranges UK haulage, giving importers a clear view of their shipment from booking through to arrival.
Whether you’re importing a single container or managing regular FCL shipments, careful planning and timely documentation remain the key to keeping your supply chain running efficiently.

We had a time-critical air freight shipment coming in from China to the UK and Simon was a huge help in getting it over the line. Right before arrival, an issue came up due to a mistake from the airline, which could have turned into a real headache. Simon picked it up straight away, dealt with it quickly and managed to sort everything without any extra costs on our side. Really solid support throughout and easy to deal with, especially given the urgency. Another great job by Barrington Freight - we’ll definitely be using them again!

Good service during a turbulent global shipping period. Special thanks goes to Lee for his efficiency and proactive updates and for rescheduling a delivery in less than 24hrs when the haulage company didn’t read their own paperwork and sent a lorry without the requested tail lift. Highly recommended.
