China remains one of the UK’s most important sources of imported goods. UK imports from China were worth £73.4 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q4 2025, according to the UK Government’s China Trade and Investment Factsheet. With such a significant volume of goods moving between the two countries, delays can have a direct impact on stock availability, production schedules and customer orders.

When arranging imports from China, good freight planning can reduce many avoidable hold-ups. At Barrington Freight, we coordinate the different stages of a shipment, help businesses choose the right transport method and support the preparation of the information and documentation needed along the way.

What Causes Delays on China Shipments?

Delays can occur at almost any point between production in China and final delivery in the UK. Some are difficult to predict, while others can often be reduced through earlier planning and better coordination between suppliers, importers and freight forwarders.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • Supplier readiness: Goods may be described as almost finished when freight is booked, but outstanding production, packaging, labelling or quality checks can cause the shipment to miss its planned collection or vessel cut-off.
  • Late payments or production problems: Outstanding balance payments can prevent a factory from releasing cargo, while component or raw material shortages may delay final assembly.
  • Poor freight coordination: Late bookings, missed trucking cut-offs or cargo arriving too late at the port can result in goods being rolled onto a later sailing.
  • Documentation and customs issues: Incorrect commodity or HS codes, missing certificates, inaccurate consignee details, incorrect values or discrepancies between paperwork and the cargo can delay clearance. Customs inspections may add further time.
  • Unclear import responsibilities: Where Incoterms such as DDP are used, uncertainty over duties, VAT, EORI details or customs responsibilities can cause problems once the shipment reaches the UK.
  • Capacity and carrier constraints: During busy periods, containers and vessel space can become harder to secure. Port congestion, staffing shortages, cancelled sailings, schedule changes and additional port calls can also affect transit times.

Seasonality creates another layer of risk. Chinese New Year can disrupt production and logistics for approximately 3 – 6 weeks across the run-up to the holiday and the recovery period afterwards.

External disruption can be harder to plan around. Typhoons may affect Chinese ports, while geopolitical events can force carriers to change established routes. The World Bank has reported that diversions around the Cape of Good Hope can add around 10 – 14 days to Asia-Europe transit times.

Businesses should therefore allow some flexibility around expected shipping times from China to the UK. A freight forwarder cannot prevent every disruption, but good preparation can reduce many avoidable problems.

Choosing the Right Freight Method for China Imports

Choosing the right transport method at the start can help prevent problems later. At Barrington Freight, we consider shipment size and weight, urgency and budget before recommending an option.

Method Best suited to Key consideration
Sea freight Larger or less urgent shipments FCL uses a full container; LCL shares container space
Air freight Time-sensitive and high-value shipments Air freight can reduce transit time
Rail freight China imports where sea may be too slow An alternative when balancing cost and delivery requirements

The right choice depends on the shipment rather than simply selecting the fastest service. Businesses should allow time for collection, handling, the main freight journey, customs clearance and final delivery.

Where the delivery date is particularly important, discussing the deadline before the goods are ready can also help determine whether the planned freight method is realistic.

We are friendly, easy to work with, honest and we do not charge the earth.

At Barrington Freight, we specialise in making your importing and exporting straightforward. From customs clearance to finding the right commodity codes, our expert team is here to assist. Don’t let the complexities of global trade hold you back. Reach out to Barrington Freight for efficient and reliable shipping solutions.

Check Customs Information Before the Goods Leave China

Incorrect or incomplete customs information can cause delays after goods arrive in the UK. Checking key shipment details before departure can reduce last-minute problems.

Businesses should make sure they have:

  • An accurate commercial invoice and packing list
  • The correct commodity codes
  • EORI details where required
  • Accurate descriptions, quantities and values
  • The agreed Incoterms
  • Any certificates, licences or other documentation required for the goods

The Government’s guide to importing goods into the UK confirms that commodity codes must be included on import declarations and are used to determine matters such as duty rates and whether an import licence is required.

At Barrington Freight, we can support customs clearance through our experienced partner agencies. Providing the correct information early gives the customs agent more opportunity to identify missing or inconsistent details before they cause a hold-up.

Confirm the Shipment Is Ready Before Collection

A collection booked before the goods are genuinely ready can affect the rest of the schedule. Before arranging collection, we confirm the details needed to book the correct space and transport.

This includes the collection date and location, number of cartons, pallets or packages, shipment weight, dimensions and confirmation that the goods are packed and ready to move.

These details form an important part of the freight forwarding process. If the size, weight or cargo-ready date changes after booking, freight arrangements may need to be amended or rebooked.

It is also worth confirming that any outstanding supplier balance has been paid where payment is required before the goods can be released. A collection vehicle arriving before the factory is authorised to hand over the cargo can lead to unnecessary delays and additional arrangements.

We can also support businesses with export packing where required, helping reduce last-minute changes before collection.

Book Early and Allow for Realistic Lead Times

A realistic delivery schedule needs to account for more than the main journey from China to the UK. Time may also be required for collection, consolidation, handling, port processes, customs formalities and final delivery.

Building flexibility into sea freight schedules is particularly important when congestion affects major Chinese ports. In August 2026, Reuters reported that waiting times to berth at the Port of Shanghai had reached 12 days, according to Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc. Delays of this kind can affect vessel schedules and put further pressure on planned delivery dates.

Booking early gives us more scope to secure a suitable service and is especially important when goods are needed for a production date, product launch or stock replenishment. It also gives businesses more room to plan around Chinese holidays, periods of port congestion and other peaks in demand.

LCL sea freight involves consolidation before departure and separation after arrival, so additional handling should also be factored into the schedule.

If a requested delivery date is unlikely to be achievable, identifying that early gives the importer more time to consider a different freight method or adjust the wider supply plan.

Keep Communication Clear Throughout the Shipment

Good communication matters when a schedule changes. If a supplier is running late, a payment is outstanding, a carrier changes a sailing, or customs requires more information, passing that on quickly gives everyone involved more time to respond.

At Barrington Freight, we provide clear updates from collection through to delivery and act as a central point of contact. This helps businesses understand what is happening and whether the expected delivery date could be affected.

It also gives importers more time to adjust stock, production or customer commitments if an unexpected delay occurs.

Reduce Delays with Better China Freight Planning

Delays cannot always be avoided, but good preparation can reduce many of the problems that slow China shipments down. Choosing the right freight method, checking documentation early, confirming supplier readiness, booking in good time and allowing realistic lead times all make a difference.

At Barrington Freight, we have more than 35 years of combined freight forwarding experience and are proud members of BIFA. We help businesses arrange sea, consolidated air and rail freight from China, with customs clearance support available through our experienced partner agencies.

If you are planning an import from China, our team can help you assess the available freight options and organise the shipment around your commercial requirements.

We had a time-critical air freight shipment coming in from China to the UK and Simon was a huge help in getting it over the line. Right before arrival, an issue came up due to a mistake from the airline, which could have turned into a real headache. Simon picked it up straight away, dealt with it quickly and managed to sort everything without any extra costs on our side. Really solid support throughout and easy to deal with, especially given the urgency. Another great job by Barrington Freight - we’ll definitely be using them again!

Good service during a turbulent global shipping period. Special thanks goes to Lee for his efficiency and proactive updates and for rescheduling a delivery in less than 24hrs when the haulage company didn’t read their own paperwork and sent a lorry without the requested tail lift. Highly recommended.
